Atheena and Christina Matcham, the mother and daughter duo, recently took over as owners of Kaia FIT Vacaville. Christina started her journey with Kaia FIT six years ago after finding its flyer at the Fleet Feet store. She found a community of women passionate about becoming healthier versions of themselves through small group personal training. It became her second home. Soon after, Atheena started working out with her mom at Kaia FIT and both became certified coaches, and most recently evolving into the new owners during the COVID-19 shutdown. Kaia FIT Vacaville hosts virtual and in-person group training throughout the day. They publish the recorded workouts in their private Facebook group so women can watch and workout at their convenience.
Goals for 2021
During this new year, they hope to create more specialized programs such as strength training, spin, and Zumba. Additionally, they are going to double their membership. “It’s a labor of love. We’d love to build more members. We’d love to build more programming. But we’re still trying to figure it out and see where this pandemic goes” said Christina during our interview. “I think it’s going to get better. I’m hopeful.”
Advice for Business Owners
Other than running the FITness studio full-time, both women carry other careers. Christina has been a marketing representative for a health and wellness company for 21 years. Atheena is a therapist. They agree that in business you need to figure out your Why. “We just did a vision board. When you’re self-employed, you have to be self-motivated every day, engaged, and keep yourself and your team motivated,” said Christina.
“You also need to know your strengths and your challenges, and how to work with that,” Atheena added. “You don’t have to be a one-all, be-all. The women who connect with us will be with us. Others who don’t, that’s okay. We’re okay with that. You just have to find your place.”
